Event screenings will begin of director Mamoru Oshii’s live-action film series The Next Generation: Patlabor on April 5. It is a big project that spans seven chapters that will release theatrically in succession and will culminate in a full-length film released during Golden Week in 2015. Coming first is the prologue to the series, Episode 0, “The Glorious Section 2, Division 2,” to which there will be a free broadcast. The episode will broadcast on March 8 at 20:30 as a part of Non-Scramble on Star Channel (BS10).
Episode 0, “The Glorious Section 2, Division 2,” is a roughly 15-minute-long short work that tells the history of Section 2, Division 2 through Shigeo Shiba, a character who is linked to both the anime and the live-action films. The content will introduce the extensive world of the series so fans can make a smooth transition to the new live-action films. After the broadcast on Star Channel, the episode will be distributed on online video sites and screened at events. This may be the ideal opportunity to be able to experience the world of the live-action Patlabor series. The Next Generation: Patlabor - Chapter 1 will also release in theaters on April 5.
Development of this series into other media is currently also progressing. First up is a limited edition Blu-ray of Episode 1 that will be sold in theaters during its theatrical run. On April 26, a regular edition Blu-ray and DVD will release, and paid viewings online will also begin. The limited edition Blu-ray will cost ￥7,000, and the regular edition Blu-ray and DVD will cost ￥6,264 and ￥5,184, respectively (All prices include tax.). Sales of the “All Seven Chapter Complete Advance Viewing Tickets” will then begin on March 1. These will include two big bonuses: the “Section 2 Replica T-shirt,” a replica of the shirt worn by members of Section 2, Division 2 for photographs; and a lottery ticket to attend the premiere screening event for the full-length film to take place in Tokyo and Osaka.
