The release of a new Sailor Moon anime, which picked up buzz when the project was greenlit, has been officially announced. The anime will be simultaneously distributed worldwide this July on the well-known video distribution portal site Nico Nico Douga.
The new anime is being created as one part of the “Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Project.” Because a new anime in this series that has worldwide popularity is such a large project, video distribution will occur first and the challenging feat of distributing it simultaneously worldwide will be undertaken. This means that fans all over the world will be able to enjoy the new Sailor Moon anime together.
Another interesting piece of information that has been revealed is that the anime is being created by Toei Animation. Directing the anime is Munehisa Sakai who is responsible for the 2009 mega-hit One Piece Film: Strong World and acting as series composer is Yūji Kobayashi. Also, it has already been announced that Momoiro Clover Z will be in charge of the theme song.
Along with this announcement regarding the staff, comments from producer Atsutoshi Umezawa and director Sakai were also released. Concealed within their comments are slight hints to aspects of the story that haven’t yet been revealed. According to producer Umezawa, “This...isn’t a remake of the former anime, it’s an unlikely project in which we are starting once more from zero and creating an anime based on Takeuchi-sensei’s original work.” This new Sailor Moon anime, which is saddled with the expectations of many, will release this July.
Comment from producer Atsutoshi Umezawa:
“This anime adaptation of Sailor Moon isn’t a remake of the former anime, it’s an unlikely project in which we are starting once more from zero and creating an anime based on Takeuchi-sensei’s original work. All of us on the staff are working our hardest to show everyone a completely new Sailor Moon the likes of which has never been seen. Please look forward to it.”
Comment from Director Munehisa Sakai:
“ Sailor Moon began the same year I started working at Toei Animation and it quickly became popular. I would never have thought that 20 years later I would be in charge of this project. I used to look upon the staff working on the anime at that time with slight envy, so I’m grateful for this chance. I will do my best.”
