Comic Market 85 (C85), the world’s largest otaku convention, will be held for three days from Dec. 29-31. Comic Market 84, held this past summer, saw record attendance of 590,000 people. For C85, close to 200,000 visitors are projected for each day.
Comic Market is held biannually, once in the summer and once in the winter. The event had humble beginnings, with only 32 doujin circles participating when it was first held in December of 1975. This year, 35,000 doujin circles and nearly 600,000 attendees are expected to completely fill up Tokyo Big Sight, the venue for the event.
The main theme of Comic Market is the buying and selling of doujinshi. Companies on the frontlines of otaku culture such as Kyoto Animation, Good Smile Company, and Media Factory will also be displaying premium goods in the business booth area. A huge number of cosplayers will also crowd into the venue, posing for pictures as soon as they arrive on the scenes. It seems likely that the moe characters called kanmusu from the hugely popular browser game Kantai Collection will be the hot work among cosplayers this year.
One highlight of C85 is that Walt Disney Japan will be participating for the first time. At the same time, the company will also be doing PR for its new sci-fi movie Ender’s Game to be released in Japan on Jan. 18, 2014. We are excited to see what kind of booth Disney will have at C85.
