On Sept. 26, Kadokawa Games announced that the popular game Kantai Collection (Kan Colle) that is sweeping over the social game world is becoming an anime. This news was announced at the Kadokawa Game Studio Media Briefing 2013 Autumn held at the Tokyo International Forum in Chiyoda, Tokyo. At this briefing, the company outlined their plans for the near future. Among these was the official announcement of the 2014 release of Kadokawa Game Studio’s second game, the PS Vita game Kan Colle Kai (working title).
Kan Colle is a popular game developed and managed by Kadokawa Games that is in service through DMM.com. The game personifies Japanese naval warships from the World War II era as moe characters. The combination of military and bishojo has attracted huge support from players. As such, the number of registered players has shot through the roof. Military-themed works have been popular this year, so this accounts for a portion of its popularity as well.
The PS Vita game Kan Colle Kai will be sold as both a packaged and downloadable version. The game will have players train their own naval fleet. Other than this though, details on the game have yet to be revealed. Even regarding the anime, the media it will be expanded into, when it will be released, what company is producing it, and who the staff and cast will be are all questions that are, as of now, unanswered. Kadokawa Game Studio was established as the flagship label of Kadokawa Games. Their first title was Natural Doctrine. It seems the company is making full use of Kadokawa’s abundant know-how of areas such as manga, anime, and light novels. As an early title, they are throwing all they have into Kan Colle Kai. It seems that media mix projects that include anime and game will likely progress from here on.
