The Wind Rises is set to be screened at Canada's 38th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held from Sept. 5-15.

TIFF is one of the largest of its kind in North America. In recent years, it has become an important international film festival, on par with Venice, Berlin, and Cannes. In Hollywood it is seen as a pre-Oscar race litmus test of sorts, and it tends to greatly influence a film's financial success.

The Wind Rises was picked to be part of the Special Presentation category. This category is reserved for works by distinguished international filmmakers. Other Japanese films to be screened include Hirokazu Koreeda's Like Father, Like Son and Hitoshi Matsumoto's R100. The Wind Rises was added to this list at the last minute. Festival officials were reportedly very moved after viewing the film in Studio Ghibli's screening room. The studio then accepted their passionate offer to have the film shown at the festival.

Four other Studio Ghibli films, including Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and From up on Poppy Hill, have been shown at the festival in past years. The Wind Rises will soon be added to that list. The film is also set for official screening at the Venice International Film Festival from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7. Anticipation is growing over how the film will be received at both events.

The Wind Rises is Studio Ghibli's latest work and director Hayao Miyazaki's first film in four years. It was released in 343 theaters and on 454 screens nationwide in Japan on July 20 and has become a big hit, attracting a domestic audience of over 5.8 million.

Cameron Bailey - Toronto Film Festival Artistic Director:
> The Wind Rises is a beautiful and powerful film made with the full strength of one lone artist. The Toronto International Film Festival is extremely proud to be the first to bring director Hayao Miyazaki's latest work to North America. There are many people in Toronto that are big fans of Miyazaki’s films. I am really looking forward to the screening of The Wind Rises. I'm sure the viewers will be just as fascinated as I was by this film.
