On Aug. 3, the “Uchimizukko Big Gathering” was held in front of Akihabara Station near the UDX building in Tokyo. This is the 10th year the event has been held. Otaku agree, it really makes Akihabara feel like summer is in full power, as if the heat isn’t enough! Together, all those who love Akihabara perform uchimizu, the sprinkling of water upon the ground, to drop the temperature in the area.
At the event, many representatives participated, beginning with the station master of the JR Akihabara Station and Kanda Fire Station chief, and also including representatives from Kodomo Daigaku, Garage Akihabara, and Digital Hollywood University. Maids from the first maid cafes of Akihabara and maids from overseas cafes also participated. Everyone was tasked with holding a bucket of water for the event. In an effort to be eco-friendly, the water used for the event had been throw away water having been used to wash rice or carrots. Among the throw away water was also water that was used as bath water and water maids had cooled off in.
Also, store manager Sasakichi of the popular Thanko Rare Item Shop also participated while dressed in Attack on Titan cosplay and displayed a new way spray the water with an invention using the 3D Maneuver Gear. On a related note, guarding the area was Sergeant Wani of the group “Jitakukeibitai.”
The event has already passed, but a video is available that shows the correct way to perform uchimizu. If you’re interested, certainly watch it yourself and perhaps adopt a new summer tradition!
