Comic-Con San Diego Gets First Look at “Godzilla” to Be Released in Summer 2014

The epic action film Godzilla, produced by Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures, gave fans a glimpse at its true form at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Along with the initial trailer, teaser visuals from the film were also released.

Godzilla will be the first Godzilla film since Toho Studio's Godzilla: Final Wars was released nearly 10 years ago in 2004. The new film is set to be released in America on May 16, 2014, and in Japan later that summer. Until the Comic-Con sneak peek, which included a panel of staff and cast members talking about the film, no footage or images of the film had been made public.

Comic-Con, America's biggest pop culture event, draws a large number of fans and media outlets as it provides exclusive looks at many films, popular TV series, and comic books. The event for Hollywood's latest Godzilla film was one of the most anticipated at the convention and was held in Hall H, which is known for its large crowds. In front of a full crowd of about 6,500 people, director Gareth Edwards and cast members Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston appeared as a panel and answered questions directly from fans.

Director Gareth Edwards mentioned that filming was already over for the movie, saying that he had come to Comic-Con immediately after finishing shooting in Hawaii two days earlier. Edwards also talked about an experience he had at customs in Canada when trying to enter the country for filming. Apparently he told immigration officials that he was working on a film code-named "Nautilus." When they didn't buy his explanation, he admitted that he was directing the next Godzilla movie. He proceeded to be questioned and given advice by customs officials for about 20 minutes about what should be in the movie, and was encouraged not to "mess it up."

One fan asked what it was like to direct a Godzilla film. Edwards said that most of the pressure he felt came from himself, because he had always wanted the opportunity. He also mentioned that he hoped to make a Godzilla in the tradition of the original Toho series, something that would be considered a "real Godzilla movie." The crowd reacted with great excitement at his plans to stay true to the original Godzilla series.

After questions were over, as a surprise for the event, a 2-minute clip of never-before-seen footage from Godzilla was shown. The clip introduced the main characters and included some spectacular action sequences. When finally roaring Godzilla and his spiny dorsal fins appeared, the crowd also erupted into a roar of applause.

Although the footage itself was exclusively for Comic-Con, fans around the world shared in the excitement. With one year before its release, Godzilla is undoubtedly already becoming one of the most anticipated films of 2014.
