Successful Start for 16th Pokémon Film! Four Billion Yen in Box Office Revenue Expected!

On July 13, Pokémon Best Wishes: Extreme Speed Genesect: Mewtwo’s Awakening, the latest work of the annual Pokémon films, released in theaters throughout Japan. The film features Mewtwo, a popular Pokémon amongst fans of the series, and Red Genesect, a phantom Pokémon. Furthermore, the film is coupled with the short film Pikachu and Eevee Friends that features Eevee, another popular Pokémon. The 16th film in the series has achieved a successful start. Those who saw the movie on the morning of its release day totalled 106% of those who saw the previous film, which had a final box office earning of 3.61 billion yen, on the first day. The film is aiming to surpass the last and close at 4 billion yen.

Up until the 15th film, the series’ total audience has grown to 60 million people and over 68 billion in box office revenue. Due to various devices, it is popular every year, and was just as talked about this year as well. Splendid musicians were appointed to sing the film’s theme songs. The opening theme is “Natsumeku Sakamichi" by Daisuke and the ending theme is “Smile” by Ikimono-gakari. Also, a stellar cast of voice stars was gathered for the film, including Reiko Takashima (Mewtwo), Kouichi Yamadera (Red Genesect), and Shoko Nakagawa (Sylveon).

Furthermore, popular star Atsuko Maeda performed as the narrator of Pikachu and Eevee Friends. In regard to the role being a new challenge, she commented, “It was my first time doing such a full-fledged narrative. I did my best while imagining everyone here smiling from seeing this film,” at a stage greeting event held at Toho Cinemas Nichigeki.

Pokémon Best Wishes: Extreme Speed Genesect: Mewtwo’s Awakening together with Pikachu and Eevee Friends started in 345 theaters throughout Japan, and with summer vacation season underway, from here on it seems it will be popular. This summer, there is a great number of anime films, and many movie-goers seem to be gathering with courage and excitement.
