On July 13, Pokémon Best Wishes: Extreme Speed Genesect: Mewtwo’s Awakening, the 16th Pokémon film, will release in Toho Cinemas throughout Japan.
Every year, a new Pokémon film releases and is always a big summer event for fans. Each film has drawn a huge audience and ranked high every year among films. Continuing from last year, the film will be a double feature that includes both the 16th Pokémon main film full of intense Pokémon battles and the short film Pikachu and Eevee Friends starring Pikachu, of course.
A special part of Pokémon films is the popular talent appointed as the voice stars. This year, actress Reiko Takashima and Shoko Nakagawa, who has an abundance of otaku knowledge, as well as the comedic duo Heisei Nobushi Kobushi have been cast. Also, Kouichi Yamadera, a famous voice actor in Japan, will be a guest star. Furthermore, Atsuko Maeda, a former member of the idol group AKB48 who is performing as Pikachu in the short film, will be narrating. Kunihiko Yuyama, who is familiar to fans for directing Pokémon anime, is directing the film, and the theme song “Smile” is being performed by Ikimono-gakari.
Pokémon Best Wishes: Extreme Speed Genesect: Mewtwo’s Awakening tells the story of Ash, Pikachu, and their friends as they head out to the metropolis New Tork City. Pokémon Hills is located within the city and is a place where only Pokémon can live. Although it is currently under construction, it should be finished very shortly. However, a red Genesect Pokémon suddenly appears. Genesect is a Pokémon that Team Plasma was able to resurrect from a fossil over 300 million years old to be used as a weapon. Genesect regards everyone as a rival, and acting violently, leads Ash and his friends into a trap. A violent battle begins as Mewtwo fights against Genesect, who is attacking the Pokémon of New Tork City. As an intense battle engulfs the streets, will Ash and Pikachu be able to defend themselves?!
On the other hand, Pikachu and Eevee Friends is a lighthearted tale of the adorable Pikachu and his friends. One summer day, Pikachu and his friends meet Sylveon in a field of flowers and are invited to go deep into the forest. There they find the “Eevee House,” a place where Eevee and all of the evolutions live together. This heartwarming story portrays Pikachu and various other Pokémon interacting with one another.
