“Monogatari Series Second Season” Episode 1 Recap: “Tsubasa Tiger, Part 1” 0

I am a cat. I am a tiger. This is a story about betrayal, about how I came to know about people.

The original book, published as part of the "Media Mix Impossible Fantasy Novels" by Nisio Isin, became a legendary title when it was animated by director Akiyuki Shinbo in 2009. Shinbo also worked on other popular anime such as Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

The story is a teen fantasy about the protagonist, Araragi Koyomi, and a group of girls possessed by supernatural beings. The first part of the first season, Bakemonogatari, raked in record sales in DVDs, Blu-rays, as well as theme song and character song CDs. This success was then followed by Nisemonogatari and Nekomonogatari (Black) in 2012. In anticipation of the movie Kizumonogatari, the second season of the Monogatari series has begun.

"I don't know anything, except everything that I know." The character Hanekawa Tsubasa is always bothered by stress due to her extreme perfection. This story is based on the Golden Week incident in Nekomonogatari (Black). In this season, she wants to be "just like anyone else out there."

The new school term has just started and Tsubasa is glared down by a white tiger on the way to school. Even though she knows it is peculiar and that she should instinctively run away, she can't. After speaking to Senjougahara Hitagi, Tsubasa's house burns down.

Even though Hitagi says that she could die together with Tsubasa, she can't trust her, so she lives in the debris alone. The next morning, her usual cool expression finally breaks down and she is woken up by her own tears.

Director Shinbo is known for his special technique known as the "Shaft Angle" in which he provocatively captures a face looking down.

The opening theme song, "Chocolate Insomnia," is sung by Tsubasa's voice actress, Yui Horie. The song was written by famous songwriter Satoru Kousaki. The ending theme, "Ai wo Utae," was written by Jin and sung by Luna Haruna.

Youth means living to the very last moment.
