NASA has announced the results of the GPM (Global Precipitation Management) PR character contest which closed in April. “GPM” by Kiriga Yuki (Tokyo, Japan) and “Mizu-chan” by Sabrynne Buchholz (Colorado, U.S.) were selected as the two first prize winners.
The contest, “GPM Anime Challenge” – named after the Japanese anime culture which is popular the world over – was open to applicants worldwide to find a character to introduce GPM in the world of education. NASA scientists selected the results from among the more than 40 responses which arrived via the Internet, deciding the two best characters overall and the two best from each of the three separate age categories. All of the prize-winning characters can be seen on the official GPM website.
Creator profiles and which points of the design are relevant to precipitation science and GPM are also presented on the official website. The prize winner, Kiriga Yuki, is a female mangaka and illustrator working in Japan. From now on, “GPM” and “Mizu-chan” will be used in NASA’s official educational program’s manga and other materials that introduce precipitation science and GPM.
