Surprise Announcement Made at Japan Expo Regarding New “Madoka Magica” Movie

A surprise announcement regarding the popular anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica was made at the 14th Japan Expo held at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center in Paris, France. This year’s Japan Expo, the largest Japanese culture festival in Europe, began on July 4. On July 6 at 11:00 a.m. in the exhibition center, an event for introducing popular Japanese anime, titled “Aniplex Conference,” was held. It was here that the surprise announcement was made.

In the middle of the event, the lights suddenly went out, and a sudden news flash regarding the film Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, which will be released in Japan on Oct. 26, was screened. At the end of the screening, it was announced that the film will release on Nov. 16 at the Grand Rex in Paris. In response to this announcement, the 3,000 fans packed into the hall erupted in cheers of joy. French cosplayers dressed as characters from the series then appeared on stage, and the atmosphere livened up even more.

The movie releasing in France just three weeks after its release in Japan is speedy indeed. It is quite rare for a Japanese anime to be release abroad in Europe so soon after its release in Japan. There is no doubt that this alone warranted the huge surprise and joy that fans felt. The news flash that was screened was also released in Japan on the same day. From this simultaneous release, it became clear that this is a project between Japan and France.

Aniplex producer Atsuhiro Iwakami, who was present at this event, said, “I’m very happy that we were able to release this news simultaneously in Japan and France.” In response to the French fans, he gave this message:

>The TV series and first part of the movie for Puella Magi Madoka Magica ended beautifully. According to people’s reactions, we may take the route of a happy end or the route of a bad end. By all means, I’d like everyone to see the upcoming story with their own eyes in theaters.

Rebellion won’t just release in Japan and France, from the outset, the plan was to release it worldwide. It has been decided that the movie will release this winter in North America, and it is anticipated that the movie will release in other countries worldwide thereafter.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a late night TV anime that began broadcasting in January 2011. The work is a big hit that caught fans off guard with its surprisingly unique magical girl premise. The incredibly talented staff on the anime includes Akiyuki Shinbo as director, Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus) as scriptwriter, and Ume Aoki as character planner. The anime was produced by Shaft.

Last fall, the first two movies in the series, Beginnings and Eternal, which are a re-editing of all 12 episodes of the anime, were released and did very well. The third movie, Rebellion, will deliver an entirely new story to fans.
