Live-Action Film Adaptation of Shotaro Ishinomori’s “009-1” to Release Sept. 7

On Sept. 7, the live-action film adaptation of 009-1, one of the late Shotaro Ishinomori’s masterpieces, will release in theaters throughout Japan. Mayuko Iwasa will be performing the almost completely cyborg agent, Mylene Hoffman. The film, packed with action and seduction, is bound to be entertaining and will include both scenes and characters from the original work as well as original thrilling and sexy scenes. The film will first have a limited late show at Shinjuku Wald 9, and thereafter sequentially release in theaters throughout Japan.

Ishinomori’s manga 009-1 was distributed from the late 1960s through the ‘70s. Set in the near future, the story follow the actions and troubles of a cyborg agent of the Western Bloc active in the bilateral cold war. In 2006, Naoyuki Konno directed the TV anime adaptation.

Ishinomori’s various sci-fi manga including Cyborg 009 and Android Kikaider are known throughout the world. However, he also left behind manga masterpieces of the shoujo and social genres. Among them, 009-1 was an ambitious work embossed with violence and sexiness. The live-action movie will inherit the same traits as the manga.

This year would have been Ishinomori’s 75th birthday, and the film is planned to be a commemorative work. In recent years, the anime adaptation Cyborg 009 has advanced overseas, and Ishinomori’s works have been basking in a lot of attention. Among such works, this live-action adaptation of 009-1 seems like it will show the full breadth of his influence.
