Time of Eve is an anime that released on the internet back in 2008, and afterward, seized the hearts of many movie fans and created a cult following. Now, it has been announced that director Yasuhiro Yoshiura’s long-awaited new work Patema Inverted will be released in Japan on Nov. 9. The movie came to light quickly after distribution of Patema Inverted: Beginning of the Day in February 2012. Since the decision to begin production on this new movie, news up until now has been scarce. Along with the release date being cemented, attention for this movie is really starting to pick up.
The timing of this announcement also synched up with the start of the world’s largest animation film festival, Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. Patema Inverted was officially screened at the film festival on June 13 and 14 in front of officials from the field of animation as well as fans of animation. It was the first time the movie was screened for general audiences. Tickets for the screening sold out in a few hours, and it quickly picked up huge attention.
Patema Inverted takes place in a world that has befallen a great calamity. In this world, the sky is loathed and people live in underground cities. In a town named Aiga there lives a boy named Age. One day, he meets an “inverted girl” named Patema. While exploring the depths underground by herself, Patema seems to fall into an empty space. The two of them meeting becomes a prohibited incident that unravels the mystery of the forbidden “topsy-turvy world.” Izamu, the ruler of Aiga, orders for the capture of the “inverted one.” The original idea of the existence of these these two opposite worlds is not the story’s only strong suit, it also includes many cinematic highlights. This “inverted trip spectacle” created by director Yoshiura seems like it will become a hot topic this fall.
On this film, Yoshiura acted as original creator, scriptwriter, and director. A unique world like that shown in Time of Eve, can be noticed in this movie as well. Also, the appointment of Michiru Oshima, who has worked on Fullmetal Alchemist, The Tatami Galaxy, and more, as music director will no doubt make fans happy.
In celebration of the movie’s official screening at Annecy, the prologue to this movie, Patema Inverted: Beginning of the Day, began being redistributed on Nico Nico Douga and GyaO. Due to its story being closely linked to the new movie, this too is a must-see.
