Pony Canyon, makers of such anime as the currently broadcasting Attack on Titan and The Devil is a Part-Timer, together with Hisanori Yoshida, an announcer for Nippon Broadcasting who is active in anime-related programs and events, are jointly holding the Animeka Taishou Awards.
Whether it’s manga, novels, short stories, illustrations, music, or more, makers of original works hoping to make them into an anime can apply for these awards regardless of genre. The grand prize is 1 million yen and the chance for the work to be made into an anime. Runners up will receive a prize of 300,000 yen. The application period is running now until Sept. 2. Both digital and analog applications are being accepted. Winners of each prize will be announced at the end of October.
How serious this project is can be seen from the members of the judging panel. First are three representatives from anime production companies that have gained the trust of many anime fans: Mitsuhisa Ishikawa (president of Production I.G), Masuo Ueda (president of A-1 Pictures), and Yuji Matsukura (executive production manager of J.C.Staff). Though, the judges aren’t just from companies that make anime. Also included on the judging panel are Aki Takanori, president of Good Smile Company which is well-known for its figures including the Nendoroid series, and Takaki Kosaka, president of the game maker Nitroplus which Gen Urobuchi is also attached to. Due to the inclusion of these two, it seems that we can also expect the winners’ works to be developed into goods. Of course, an anime producer at Pony Canyon will also be included on the judging panel.
In Japan, a country called “the major power in original works,” not just manga and novels, but also many other things are made into anime. However, a project such as this for directly recruiting an original work to be turned into an anime has not been seen up until now and is being called an entirely new experiment. Just what kind of talent will they find? We are anxiously waiting to find out.
