Life-Size Balloon of Titan from Popular Anime “Attack on Titan” Impresses Fans!

Of this summer’s anime, Attack on Titan seems to be the most notable. Immediately following the broadcasts, Twitter and Pixiv are flooded with Titan posts, and it seems to be becoming the most-talked about topic on the Internet among otaku.

The effect of the anime hasn’t been limited to just the Internet. Koudansha reported that a total of 8.7 million copies of author Hajime Isayama’s comics had been printed prior to the anime broadcast, yet only two months after the anime debuted, the cummulative total of copies from all 10 volumes have now broken through 20 million. On the weekly sales ranking for over-the-counter sales in bookstores by title, the series was said to have “record high sales for an anime adaptation work.”

Furthermore, sales of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, the magazine the series is serialized in, have increased. The sales of the fifth volume that released on April 9 after the anime debuted on TV increased by 30% compared to the prior fourth volume.

Receiving this popularity, at the first floor of Kodansha’s head office, the life-size balloon of a Titan’s head (approx. 4 meters) that was displayed at Anime Contents Expo in March was open to the public for a limited time from June 4-7 and appealed to the popularity of the Titans. A supplement project for the series is also in the works and will be featured in four consecutive issues of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine starting with the July issue. It seems Titan fandom shows no signs of slowing down.
