An unexpected talent has been chosen to voice the lead character of Studio Ghibli's latest film The Wind Has Risen: Hideaki Anno (age 52), who is known for directing Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The Wind Has Risen is about the life of the young engineer Jiro Horikoshi who developed the Zero fighter plane and is modeled after Tatsuo Hori’s short story of the same name. Director Hayao Miyazaki offered the role of the main character to Anno after imagining bringing his fast talking, smoothly read lines, and dignity to the character. Through auditioning, Anno was selected.
In regard to appointing the role, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki commented, “He has a presence that even actors can’t usually possess. What is made by a director who designs a movie and an aircraft designer is different, but I think there are also common features. It’s a stretch though (laughs).”
Anno commented, “Because it is my first time performing a leading role, I had the impression there were going to be too many scenes and it would be tough.” He went on to discuss his similarities to Jiro: “I think what I share with Jiro from the movie is the job of ‘shaping a dream.’ That is something I greatly understand and there are places where that is communicated through my life. Miyazaki was pleased with me performing the post recording as my former self, so that is of course the case. What is made from creating anime and movies and creating aircrafts differs, but I strongly feel that they are the same in that they both shape dreams.”
The Wind Has Risen, a recital contest between Anno and Miyazaki, who has been Anno’s teacher since he drew the Giant God Warrior scene in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, will open on July 20.
