“Saint Young Men” Chapter 1 Now Protected Under a Creative Commons License

On April 30, the Kodansha Morning’s editorial department announced that the first four pages of the first chapter of Saint Young Men, “Buddha’s Day Off,” are now protected under a Creative Commons license (CCL), meaning that these pages are now available for free use on personal blogs and for business purposes. Currently on Morning’s web site, JPEG images for web use and TIFF images for business printing use are available.

Saint Young Men is a popular comic currently being serialized in Monthly Morning Two. The story follows Jesus and Buddha who are on a vacation and sharing a room together in modern day Tachikawa, Tokyo. The series has picked up attention for its surreal situations and witty dialogue.

Even though these pages are now protected for free use under a CCL, there are a few stipulations: the original author must be credited, they cannot be changed (including their translations), they must be displayed in order, and the panels or individual pages cannot be extracted for use elsewhere. Furthermore, be careful to remember that the CCL only covers the first four pages.

The use of a CCL for these pages was decided by author Hikaru Nakamura because he wanted more people to become familiar with the work before the film adaptation’s release on May 10.
