Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods was released in 312 theaters throughout Japan on March 30, and it grabbed the top spot for weekend box office earnings during its opening weekend. Having also ranked first in weekend box office earnings for three consecutive weeks after its release, it’s safe to say that the movie’s momentum isn’t slowing down.

Sixteen days after its opening, the movie surpassed 1.8 million total tickets sold and 2.2 billion yen at the box office. The movie also now holds the record for fastest grossing movie of 2013. The popularity of the generation-crossing Dragon Ball remains unchanged. The movie is anticipated to break even more records as its theater run continues, and it also seems to be causing quite a stir in the movie industry.

The secret to the popularity of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is its popular characters who are known by kids and adults alike. These characters all appear together in the movie. Furthermore, series creator Akira Toriyama worked closely on the movie, creating the character designs and story. The movie’s entirely original story has set fans’ hearts ablaze.

Further showcasing the popularity of Dragon Ball is the exhibition “Akira Toriyama: The World of Dragon Ball,” which was held at Takashimaya in Tokyo and attracted 72,000 attendees during its 19 day run. The exhibit will also be held at the Hanshin Department Store in Umeda, Osaka and at the Matsuzakaya Museum in Nagoya.
