The second season of Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (or Oreimo for short), which gathered huge support from fans when its first season was broadcast in 2010, began broadcasting earlier this month on Tokyo MX and other stations.
On March 30, it was announced that the second season will be comprised of 16 episodes. Normally, TV anime are broadcast over a span of three months with the first season comprising roughly 13 episodes and the second season being comparable. Therefore, for one season of a 30-minute anime to span 16 episodes is rare.
However, there is a reason to explain this. The season will span 13 episodes as usual on TV with the last three episodes to be delivered to fans back to back after the TV broadcast ends. How this will be achieved is still a mystery, but it seems like they are searching for a way that will surprise fans.
Another example of something similar for the series to occur was the “True Route” episode of Season 1 that was distributed on the web to fans. Aniplex, the production studio behind Oreimo, is also doing something similar for their work Nekomonogatari (Kuro) in which they will simultaneously release an episode on TV, satellite, and on the web. It seems that they are using their current experience in media crossovers for Oreimo as well.
The second season is also running concurrent with Tsukasa Fushimi’s original light novel for Oreimo, the final volume of which will be released on June 7 from Dengeki Bunko and ASCII Media Works, right in the middle of the anime’s broadcast run. Since the anime completely covers the light novels, how the anime will operate together with the light novel is not to be missed.
