The Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings anime series were featured on a special box of chocolates released for sale on March 23, with proceeds earmarked for earthquake and tsunami disaster recovery efforts.
The San Juan Ciocolata box is the latest in the Sengoku Basara series geared to reconstruction efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011.
The box art features an illustration by Toru Okubo, character designer for the samurai anime series in 2012. Sendai-based feudal warlord Date Masamune and his retainer Katakura Kojuro strike a pose with Japanese-built Spanish galleon San Juan Bautista, whose replica is on display in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture.
Ishinomaki was one of the hardest-hit areas in the Tohoku region on March 11, 2011. Ishinomaki is hoping that the popularity of Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings will raise awareness about the city and attract tourists.
The San Juan Ciocolata box was on sale at the Tokyo International Anime Fair, held March 23-24 at Tokyo Big Sight in the capital's Koto Ward. The box sold for 840 yen.
It will also be available at the Ishinomaki Mangattan Museum dedicated to manga legend Shotaro Ishinomori. The facility was badly damaged by the tsunami and forced to close. It will reopen on March 23.
