Moyoco Anno’s “Sugar Sugar Rune” Inspired Fashion Show and Exhibition Takes Place

A fashion show and exhibition based on Moyoco Anno’s magical girl manga Sugar Sugar Rune recently took place at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. It was part of the “Kyoto Manga Girls Collection, Kyoto MaGiC” project which began in 2011 and features creators designing apparel inspired by shoujo manga (comics for girls).

The fashion show “Chocolat and Vanilla’ – Magical Girls’ Wardrobe” was held on March 3 and showcased original creations by fashion houses and individuals, all inspired by Sugar Sugar Rune. A local Kyoto brand Pagong, which offers contemporary clothes and accessories based on kimono patterns, recreated 12 items featured in the manga using Kyoto yuzen fabric. Also, Romance, a select store in Kyoto Teramachi which stocks high fashion brands, original clothing, and accessories, created 16 items by interpreting the concept of Sugar Sugar Rune.

“Chocolat and Vanilla’s Closet,” an exhibition that started on March 20, displays clothes featured in the manga and related materials collected during the series’ run.

Moyoco Anno, born in 1971, shot to fame when her manga Happy Mania was adapted into a TV series. Her manga Jelly Beans, In the Clothes Named Fat, and Love Master X are popular amongst women. However, she has also published comics for men such as Flowers & Bees, Sakuran, and Hataraki Man. In 2009, Anno collaborated with “SHU UEMURA.” Sugar Sugar Rune was serialized in the manga magazine Nakayoshi from 2003 to 2007. The story is about two best friends, Chocolat and Vanilla, who live in the Magical World, and are chosen to compete in the human world to see who will become the next queen. The series was adapted into an anime in 2005.
