Creator Interview: UGUME

Back in January, we interviewed UGUME, a talented TOM creator who has wowed us with her vibrant and eye-catching Touhou Project fanart. Read on for the interview!

Creator Introduction
- Name: UGUME
- Experience: Three years
- Creator's Mypage: http://otakumode.com/ugume/posts

TOM: What do you draw the most of?
UGUME: Touhou Project.

TOM: In a few words, what is TOM to you?
UGUME: I am very grateful for TOM. It has given me the chance to connect with
people abroad who also enjoy this genre; this is something which I have
always wanted to do. Thank you very much.

TOM: What started your desire to illustrate?
UGUME: My desire to illustrate first arose when I encountered Touhou. When I
first started, I was just killing time, but I've met many other artists
and now drawing has becoming something indispensable to me.

TOM: How do you create your art?
UGUME: I mainly use a tablet and software with my PC for illustrating. I also
draw using more traditional methods, but they are not as good compared
to my digital work.

TOM: What was your most difficult work?
UGUME: (1/11)
This is a work from a year ago, and so far this work has taken the longest
to complete. Rather than just placing a lot of importance on the
character, I wanted to make the scenery really pop, so I drew various
scenes. It was a really good experience.

TOM: Which work are you most pleased with?
UGUME: (2/11)
I was able to submit this work to a certain illustration collection. I
was very particular about the character and the pocket watch. To me,
this is my best work to date.

TOM: What work were you the most particular on?
UGUME: (3/11)
With this work, I wanted to make an illustration inspired by the
character's theme song. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0zhhbEokO4 ).
I contemplated this piece a lot to feel out the musical image, and I
inserted my own interpretation into the illustration.

TOM: Which work’s background were you the most particular about?
UGUME: (4/11)
Compared to my other works, this background is quite simple. However, I aimed to
create an “endless blue sky” to give the piece an open and refreshing
scene.

TOM: What is your most flashy work?
UGUME: (5/11)
The colors aren't that flashy, but the perspective and composition, along
with the radiance of the wings and background, make it a bold illustration.

TOM: What is your simplest work?
UGUME: (6/11)
I drew this illustration for a business card, so it didn't have much of a
background. However, I tried to make it stylized with the feeling that
what she is holding will pop out of the page.

TOM: Tell us about an illustration of a character you like.
UGUME: (7/11)
This is Murasa Minamitsu from Touhou Project. She died and became the
captain of a ghost ship.

TOM: Do you like drawing girls, boys, or animals the most?
UGUME: I like to draw girls; cute and cool characters are my style. I
also like to draw inorganic things like mecha.

TOM: What are your favorite colors?
UGUME: I like deep blue and green hues, similar to sea colors. Because I
have always loved the sea, many of my works use these colors.

TOM: How do you practice drawing?
UGUME: I don’t do much “practicing.” I just choose a theme, set a goal, and
enjoy the process. To me this is great! I think it’s better to think
“drawing is practice” than think “I have to practice to be able to draw.”

TOM: Could you show us some of your art tools?
UGUME: (8/11)
This isn't a photo of my art tools, but rather my work environment.

TOM: Could you show us a draft illustration?
UGUME: (9/11)(10/11)
It may be difficult to understand, but here is a rough draft.

TOM: Could we see something you are currently working on?
UGUME: (11/11)
This piece is planned to be used in a CD booklet.
