From the Char Auris to a Porsche Itasha, the Tokyo Auto Salon 2013 Wows with Anime Cars

The Tokyo Auto Salon 2013, a festival for custom cars and tuners, was held at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba until Jan. 13. This year, the festival was largely expanded and took up the entire convention center. It was the largest expansion in the festival’s history.

The car that caught the most attention at the festival this year was the Char Auris. This car has become widely talked about since Toyota announced that it would be available to purchase this year (http://nlab.itmedia.co.jp/nl/articles/1301/09/news099.html). The body is of course painted red to match Char’s title of “The Red Comet”, and also features the Republic of Zeon emblem on the front, rear, and steering wheel. Even at a glance, the car is captivating, and a large crowd was gathered around it at the festival.

The festival also featured Itasha on display. Body Shop New Type was displaying a tuned car that used the Mazda RX-7 as its base and was loaded with a six-cylinder Toyota 2JZ engine that has a maximum output of 612PS (~600HP). This car also featured a vivid, light blue paint job and was decorated with Hatsune Miku. Carseven was displaying a Suzuki Swift Sport Itasha decked out with Touhou characters. At TechnoPromotion’s booth, a stage show for Moe Code was held in which a Porsche Cayenne was transformed into an Itasha. Car Sense’s Patrol Boy also made an appearance. This year, a “moe moe version” was displayed that was themed around “99% fun and 1% serious moe artwork.” It was clear to see that every company brought their A-game to the festival.

The Tokyo Auto Salon 2013 was a meeting of both the anime industry and the automotive industry that gave attendees a lot to experience. From here on, expect to see anime collaborations between even more industries. Here’s to hoping that this trend in anime and manga continues for a long time.
