2012 marked the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy and Metal Gear. In commemoration, an event was held on Dec. 18 showcasing “extreme charaben” created in the motifs of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy and KONAMI’s Metal Gear. The event, hosted by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ), also featured charaben created by SCEJ as an indication of their thanks for both huge series, which have both been released on SCEJ’s PlayStation platform.
Appearing at the event was the producer of Final Fantasy at Square Enix, Yoshinori Kitase, as well as the director of KONAMI’s Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima, and the art director at Kojima Productions, Yoji Shinkawa. They each shared their thoughts on the series they helped produce.
After the speeches, it was time to show off the “extreme charaben”. The painstakingly detailed charaben were shown in equally detailed boxes, such as one in the shape of a PlayStation 3 that had a Dualshock controller chopstick rest and a Blu-ray disk message card.
The charaben themselves were breathtaking. The Final Fantasy charaben included one of Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth, and one featuring several chocobos and moogles. The Metal Gear charaben featured Old Snake, Naked Snake, and Raiden, as well as a second one that featured Snake hiding under a cardboard box.
Everyone was astonished by the high quality of the charaben, and made comments like,
“I am unworthy of eating such beauty,” and, “It has the craftsmanship of a figure,” and, “I wonder if they used a 3D scanner to make it.” The charaben were truly works of art and a great way to commemorate these historic series.
