Katsuhiro Otomo’s Short Anime “Combustible” Wins at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival

At the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival, director Katsuhiro Otomo’s newest work Combustible was chosen as the winner of the Animation category. Speaking of Katsuhiro, he is famous not only in Japan, but overseas as well. At the same time he worked as the manga artist on Akira, he also directed an anime movie and a live-action movie for the series. He is indeed a man of many talents. The number one reason why Combustible was chosen for first place was the beauty of its free use of CG. Its dramatic story was also highly praised.

Japan Media Arts Festival is sponsored by the the National Art Center of Tokyo. Works were selected from four categories (art, entertainment, animation, and manga) and given awards such as the Award of Excellence, the Rookie of the Year award, and the award for Best Work.

Four works were chosen from the animation category to receive awards, three of which were full-length movies. Among these was the film The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki, which was a great success commercially. The film was directed by Mamoru Hozoda, who is known for his work on Summer Wars. He is even being called director Hayao Miyazaki’s successor who will carry the next generation of Japanese anime on his shoulders.

All of the works that won are definitely worth seeing!
