In December 2012, a special event took place to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the game series Final Fantasy and Metal Gear. At the event, a project called “Kyukyoku no Kyaraben”, or “Extreme Charaben”, was announced. The project involves the reproduction of characters or memorable scenes from the games.
For those who are unfamiliar with charaben, they are bentos crafted after characters or themes from popular works, primarily anime and games. Many people who live overseas may be unfamiliar with bento, but in Japan, they are a staple of everyday life. Bentos are so popular that they can be bought just about anywhere, from convenience stores to train stations. It can be said the the project is a marrying of two everyday aspects of life for gamers: games and bentos.
On Dec. 18, 2012, the “Extreme Charaben” project was brought to a close at a presentation ceremony displaying the charaben from the event.
