On Dec. 23, 2012, the flip book-like anime short “Pendulum”, which makes use of projection mapping, was shown for the first time. The video has garnered a great deal of attention after being chosen as the official video for English rock band Muse’s song “Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption)”. The video was made using the song as background music, and when the band saw it, they were deeply moved. The video went on to reach number one on the iTunes Store’s Top Music Video Ranking.
At an event, the creator of “Pendulum”, Tekken, took the stage with his face painted as white was a ghost and wearing a red and black cloak. Looking at his photo, it’s easy to wonder, “Who is this oddly dressed guy?”
Surprisingly, Tekken started as a Japanese comedian whose forte was using flip books to tell stories and make people laugh. The story of “Pendulum” follows the life of a man shown through a swinging pendulum. The piece is quite a serious one among the 180 comedy works he has performed up until now. After it was uploaded online, the short went viral, with people worldwide commented on the video saying things like, “It’s so moving,” and “I can’t stop watching it.”
The video has had a much bigger reverberation than was anticipated. To the astonishment of the crowd, Tekken said at the event, “I plan to do more work as a manga artist than as a comedian in 2013. This event may be the last for the comedian Tekken. ”
From Dec. 26, 2012 to Jan. 31, 2013, at the indoor theme park “Tokyo Joypolis” in Odaiba, Tokyo, a special version of the video, titled “Tekken Flip Book Tokyo Joypolis Special Version” will be screened on the main stage.
Expect to hear even more from manga artist Tekken in the future.
