Fans Celebrate Popular Character’s Birthday

Have you celebrated anyone’s birthday recently? Maybe a family member’s or a friend’s? Do you know who celebrated a birthday on Dec. 20, 2012? The answer is Akashi Seijuro, one of the characters from Kuroko no Basuke. On this day, many fans in Japan celebrated the popular character’s birthday.

Kuroko no Basuke is a shonen manga themed around basketball. Currently, the manga is extremely popular with young girls. On Dec. 20, Tweets of fans congratulating Akashi, with some even showing off their homemade birthday cakes that they made for the occasion were posted to Twitter. On Yahoo Japan, the keyword “Akashi Seijuro” surfaced with around 50,000 searches shortly after the day began.

Some people may say, “What’s the big deal, it’s just a fictional character’s birthday!” However, for enthusiastic fans, characters’ birthdays are an enjoyable topic. Other parts of the world also celebrate characters’ birthdays. One of the oldest examples of this is actually from overseas. Established in 1934 in America, the Baker Street Irregulars is a Sherlock Holmes fan club that gets together in New York every year to have a dinner party in celebration of Sherlock Holmes’ birthday on Jan. 6. Former American Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman were even members.

Why not look up your favorite characters’ birthdays and celebrate them too?
