When it comes to “4koma” or four panel comedy manga strips, you’d be hard pressed to find one more popular or influential than Kagami Yoshimizu’s Lucky Star! Serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comptiq magazine since 2003, the series was also adapted into a hit TV anime series produced by Kyoto Animation and aired in 2007.

Lucky Star is a comedy “gag manga” with no ongoing plot but is centered around the lives of four ordinary Japanese high school girls—Konata Izumi, Kagami Hiiragi, Tsukasa Hiiragi, and Miyuki Takara—who each live in Kasukabe in Saitama Prefecture. The series is also well loved by fans for its frequent pop culture references including classic and recent anime and manga as well as tokusatsu shows.
