Godzilla is now so famous that the name of the iconic Japanese tokusatsu monster has even entered the English language as a regular word meaning something huge and terrifying, and you can even add the suffix -zilla to pretty much anything to indicate things have gotten well and truly out of control.

Godzilla made its first appearance in the film of the same name (sometimes romanized as “Gojira”) directed by Ishiro Honda in 1954. A pro-science, anti-nuclear and humanist tale, the original Godzilla movie depicted the well-known kaiju as a prehistoric monster awakened from a millennia-long slumber by radioactive bombing which has also given it special powers including the “atomic breath” heat ray.

Although Godzilla is often depicted as a destructive force, the kaiju has often fought against other monsters such as King Ghidorah, Gigan, Mechagodzilla, Megalon, Biollante, Megaguirus, Mothra, Rodan, and Anguirus. Godzilla has even faced off against other giant monsters in cross-over movies such as Godzilla vs King Kong and Fantastic Four. The King of the Monsters has also received a number of Hollywood outings including 2014’s Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards as well as a relaunched Japanese movie directed by Hideaki Anno in 2016 - Godzilla Resurgence.
