The Fate series began with the TYPE MOON adult visual novel Fate/stay night released Jan. 30, 2004 in Japan. An all-ages version titled Fate/stay night Réalta Nua was released shortly thereafter. Numerous sequels and spinoffs as well as manga, fighting games, anime, novels, and film adaptations based on the series have been now been created.

The magical fantasy world of the Fate series is rich with both action and emotion as it follows Masters and their summoned Servants who battle in the Holy Grail War on the behalf of them with the goal of being the last pair left to claim the Holy Grail - an artifact that is said to be able to grant any wish to whomever comes to claim it.

Fate/stay night : Released Jan. 30, 2004 in Japan, Fate/stay night is the adult visual novel that kicked off the Fate series. The game was created by the Japanese game company TYPE-MOON as its first commercial work. The story follows protagonist Master Shirou Emiya and Servant Saber as he struggles to learn magecraft, become a Hero of Justice, and together try to win the Fifth Holy Grail War.
Fate/hollow ataraxia : Released Oct. 28, 2005 in Japan, Fate/hollow ataraxia is a sequel to Fate/stay night that takes place six months afterwards. Set in a dreamlike world that reflects multiple timelines at once, Shirou Emiya is tasked with fighting for the truth behind the seemingly endless and inescapable even by death four-day loop that him and his friends are caught in.
Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA : Written by Hiroshi Hiroyama (aka KALMIA) and serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine from 2007 to 2008, Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA is a spinoff manga that parodies the magical girl genre. It is set in Fuyuki city, the same setting at Fate/stay night and Fate/hollow ataraxia, but during a different timeline where the Holy Grail War ritual is stopped before it can even begin. It follows the story of an ordinary middle school student named Illyasviel von Einzbern who becomes a magical girl and must collect Class Cards together with another Magical Girl, Miyu as well as survive the attempt on her life by a girl named Kuro who bears a striking resemblance to her. The three manga series spawned multiple anime adaptations, a Nintendo 3DS game released exclusively in Japan, and an animated film.
Fate/EXTRA : Released on July 22, 2010, Fate/EXTRA is a dungeon crawl role playing game by TYPE-MOON and Image Epoch. Although it shares events of Fate/stay night, the story diverges from them during the 1970s when a major incidents starts to dry up the world’s mana. The story follow Hakuno Kishinami who suddenly awakes in a virtual world with no recollection of the past and is tasked as a Master to win the Holy Grail War together with a Servant where failing an Arena duel means being deleted from the virtual world and dieing in the other. Players are able to choose Saber, Archer, or Caster to be their Servant. The companion game Fate/Extra CCC was released in Mar. 28, 2013. The companion game is set on the Far side of the Moon Cell and Hakuno is tasked with finding a way to escape the virtual world.
Fate/Apocrypha : Written by Yuuichirou Higashide and illustrated by Ototsugu Konoe, Fate/Apocrypha is a light novel that spans five volumes that were released from Dec. 29, 2012 to Dec. 30, 2014. The setting is a parallel world to Fate/stay night in which the events of Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero did not happen because the Greater Grail was stolen from Fuyuki City after the Third Holy Grail War. However, around the time that the Fifth Holy Grail War would have taken place, characters end up having to battle in the Great Holy Grail War between the Black Faction (made up of members who are part of the Yggdmillennia magi group which stole the Greater Grail and now want to secede from the Mage’s Association) and the Red Faction who must retrieve the Greater Grail and prevent the secession.
Fate/Grand Order : Released in July of 2015, Fate/Grand Order is an mobile RPG. The game has seven settings throughout history where Holy Grails are located and players take part in what has been referred to as the “greatest Holy Grail War”. It is set in a timeline that splits just before the incidents in the short story Clock Tower 2015 due to character Lev Reinol Flauros making a different decision that in the original story.
Fate/Zero : Written by Gen Urobuchi and illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi, Fate/Zero is a four volume light novel series which released from Dec. 29, 2006 to Dec. 29, 2007. It is a prequel to Fate/stay night taking place 10 years prior and chronicles the Fourth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City. The story follows Kiritsugu Emiya (aka Magus Killer) who struggles with inner conflicts; a major one being that he is torn between his love for his family and what he must do to obtain the Holy Grail.
