Seimei Shrine was founded in memory of the Heian-era scholar Abe no Seimei but has now stepped firmly into the modern era with a special internet site, “Hoshi ni Negai wo” (Send Wishes to the Stars), where you can post your very own Tanabata requests.

About Hoshi ni Negai wo:
Hoshi ni Negai wo is a project in which Facebook, Twitter, and other social media users are invited to post their wishes for Tanabata on a special website where they will be displayed on the traditional “Tanzaku” banners. The site will open for a limited period covering the festival of Tanabata across both the lunar and solar calendars. In the spirit of “making a wish once a year,” a beautiful and elegant tradition which Japanese people have honoured since time immemorial, the project hopes to deliver the wishes of social media users direct to the stars. Everyone involved is praying that the hopes and dreams of social media users will come true!
Project Duration: June 20 to Aug. 16, 2016

About Abe no Seimei
The principal deity of the Seimei Shrine, Abe no Seimei observed the movements of heavenly bodies, predicting changes in the court, guessing far off fortune and promoting many people’s popularity both in the Imperial Court and outside. As a teacher of the astrological arts, Abe no Seimei prayed to the heavens for the hopes of not only the emperor, but the elites and ordinary people too as he observed the stars of Vega (Orihime) and Altair (Hikoboshi) in the summer sky’s Milky Way.
