Where’s C-3PO?! R2-D2™ Moving Refrigerator on Display at Daikanyama Tsutaya

The R2-D2™ Moving Refrigerator, a faithful replica of fan-favorite character R2-D2 from Star Wars, is currently touring Japan. It is on display now at Tsutaya inside Daikanyama from Friday, Nov. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 22.

The R2-D2™ Moving Refrigerator is a limited edition, made-to-order product supervised by Lucasfilm Ltd. and created by home electronics maker Haier Asia Group’s brand AQUA. It is currently available for pre-order through a special site on Tokyo Otaku Mode.

The unit is the same size as R2-D2 is in the movies, 650 by 620 by 950 millimeters. It weighs in at 50 kilograms and has a top speed of 1 kilometer per hour.

The body of the unit is installed with a Peltier cooling system 1 and has an internal capacity of 6 liters. It’s big enough to keep cans and bottled drinks ice cold. You can even use R2-D2 to grab a chilled beer from when you’re thirsty!

The unit can be controlled with the included remote control to move it in all directions. The unit’s feet are also installed with level sensors to prevent it from falling over on uneven surfaces. There is an emergency shut off button on the head as well for peace of mind, especially useful for households with younger children.

The head of the unit also features a few surprises. It can move left and right and features flashing LED lights and 10 sound effects. The head moves randomly and too was supervised by Lucasfilm to be just like the real R2-D2.

A projector is also installed in the unit’s head. It can project videos through a Miracast 2 device.

The R2-D2™ Moving Refrigerator would likely even make the perfect companion for marathoning the previous Star Wars movies in preparation for the Dec. 18 release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

^1^ Unit must be plugged in using the included AC adaptor to use refrigerator function. Internal batteries are used for unit movement and projector function only.
^2^ Projection feature uses Miracast for Android via Wi-Fi. iOS devices are not supported. The projector is equipped with a Wi-Fi receiver. A device with Android Ver. 4.2 or higher is required.
