A collaboration has begun between Space Brothers, a tremendously popular TV anime with a wide fanbase, and the movie The Martian, which will be released in Japan on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 under the title Odyssey.
A trailer to The Martian has been created for the collaboration which features a superb mixture of audio and visuals of astronaut Mutta, his younger brother Hibito, who survived a disastrous incident on the moon, and the main character of The Martian, Mark Watney, who is left behind alone on Mars and struggles to survive without giving up.
Similarly to the movie in which all 7 billion people on Earth are waiting for Watney’s return, in the trailer Mutta and Hibito cheer him on too and are shown strongly hoping for his return from Mars. Will Watney be able to survive the extreme conditions of having very little food, oxygen, and no water and return home? The trailer will raise anticipation all the more for the movie.
The Martian is a sci-fi film and marks the first film on which Academy Award-winning director Ridley Scott and actor Matt Damon work together. It was released in the U.S. on Oct. 2 and kicked off its release with opening weekend box office earnings of $54,308,575 to become the number one movie in the U.S. It is the second highest grossing October movie release and fall release in history, being narrowly edged out by Gravity (titled Zero Gravity in Japan) which brought in $55,785,112 in box office revenue. It continued its run the following weekend, dropping to number two during its third week and returning to number one for weeks 4 and 5. In total it topped the chart four times. As of Nov. 8, the movie’s total U.S. box office earnings were $197,067,346. It’s the highest grossing movie ever for director Ridley Scott.
“Space flicks” have been topping charts recently with Gravity in 2013 and Interstellar in 2014. The Martian has already topped Interstellar’s closing box office numbers, and attention is growing as to whether it will be able to surpass Gravity’s closing box office of $270 million.
