Many fans would instantly recognize “the game where the round, golden creature eats dots while being chased by and chasing four ghosts.” The arcade game that became popular with its comical motion and design, published by Namco in 1980, is none other than Pac-Man. It’s loved by people all over the world as both a present and retro game through its ports to countless consumers.
This year, Pac-Man reaches its 35th anniversary. To commemorate that, Namco Entertainment has collaborated with a major Japanese company that uses precious metals, Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry, to release Pac-Man in a solid gold plate.
A Pac-Man scene is reproduced on a golden plate which is approximately 120mm x 91mm around. Not only Pac-Man and the Ghosts, but things like the Power Cookie and Fruits are reproduced with their pixel feel intact in such quality that it creates the illusion of you being able to play it.
Look at how the characters appear almost three-dimensional. Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry applied their electroforming technique for a three-dimensional treatment. In a world-first experiment, this game scene was recreated. The “K24” beneath the fruit target is proof of it being pure gold, and the star beside it is the mark of Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry’s quality assurance.
The plate is set in an acrylic case, in which it can be displayed. The “001” part from the “001/035” is where the serial number specific to the buyer is engraved.
In keeping with the 35th anniversary, the “Pac-Man 35th Anniversary Commemorative Product: Solid Gold Pac-Man” is limited to 35 units, and pre-orders are being accepted at the site below until Dec. 31. The price, also in keeping with the 35th anniversary, is 350,000 yen (before tax). Once the limit is met, pre-orders will no longer be taken, so decide quickly if you’d like to purchase this.
