“Bakuman the Movie: Takeshi Obata Illustration Works” Hits Shelves

The talked-about live-action movie Bakuman began screening in Japan on Oct. 3. Syncing up with this release, Shueisha released on Oct. 2 the book Bakuman the Movie: Takeshi Obata Illustration Works. The book is a collection of works by Takeshi Obata who has worked on countless popular series including Bakuman. It includes roughly 100 sketches and manuscript pages drawn by Obata for use as props in the movie, making it a unique collection.

The book also introduces through pictures the scenes in the movie in which the artwork was actually used, as well as includes comments. Its release is great news for those who may have noticed the illustrations in the movie but couldn’t get a good look at them. The book even includes manuscript pages not used in the movie. It will likely be an indispensable book for any fan.

Interviews are also featured in the book. The live-action movie and original work are blended through a talk between Takeshi Obata and starring actors Takeru Satoh and Ryunosuke Kamiki, a discussion with Obata and director Hitoshi One, and more.

Bakuman started as a manga by tag team Tsugumi Ohba (author) and Takeshi Obata (illustrator) that was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 2008–2012. The series focuses on boys aiming to become manga artists who grow while overcoming many obstacles. It gained popularity with a wide audience, and a TV anime that spanned 75 episodes was broadcast on NHK from 2010–2013. The movie Bakuman is an adaptation that continues the story. It is gaining appeal due to its popular starring actors Takeru Satoh and Ryunosuke Kamiki, and the addition of other unique actors as well.

In other news, a new movie adaptation has also been confirmed for Ohba and Obata’s masterpiece series, Death Note. Also making waves is the start of serialization for their new series Platinum End in Shueisha’s Jump Square on Sept. 28.
