Magi, which rose to popularity with a TV anime in 2012, is returning to TV in a new form. A TV anime adaptation of a side story titled Magi: Adventure of Sinbad has been greenlit. The anime is slated to broadcast during Anime-ism on MBS and other networks in April 2016. The anime will be a prequel to Magi. Fans are joyous over the news of this new anime.
Magi is a popular manga drawn by Shinobu Ohtaka. It began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2009, and to date 26 tankobon volumes have been published. The series is a tremendous hit, surpassing 13 million copies in print. The first season of the TV anime series was broadcast from October 2012 to March 2013. With its popularity came a second season which aired from October 2013 to March 2014.
Magi: Adventure of Sinbad, the original manga now greenlit for animation, was also created by Ohtaka. Yoshifumi Ohtera handles the illustrations. It began a short serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2013, and is currently ongoing in Ura Sunday. Several OVA were released in 2014, and these were included as DVDs in deluxe editions of the tankobon manga. It’s safe to say that the newly announced anime adaptation has been a long awaited one.
Directing the anime is Yoshikazu Miyao who has worked on S · A: Special A and Inazuma Eleven. Miyao also directed the OVA episodes. The script is being handled by Taku Kishimoto who was series composer of Haikyu!! and Silver Spoon, and producing the anime is Studio Lay-duce, the studio behind Classroom Crisis which broadcast this year from July to September.
Messages from Ohtaka and Ohtera have also been made available on the anime’s official site. Though next April is a way off, there will be more developments to come.
