World’s First Theater Specializing in 3DCG Holograms Opens in September at Yokohama Station

Using state-of-the-art technology, an entertainment theater to be used exclusively for 3DCG holograms will be built in Yokohama. The DMM VR Theater will open in early September near Yokohama Station’s west entrance. The facility will cover about 800 square meters and will have a maximum occupancy of 385 people.

The DMM VR Theater will be managed by the Theater VR Limited Liability Partnership formed by four companies including Zell Hall Network, Sagami Railway, Lawson HMV Entertainment, and Wide Wire Works. It’ll capture everyone’s attention as an ambitious experiment to create a new style of theater specializing in 3DCG.

The DMM VR Theater will focus on the concept of “CG Image Only” performances where no living person appears on stage. Through state-of-the-art 3D hologram technology, they’ll offer shows where you can see former musicians perform and fantastic illumination shows where light turns into a three-dimensional object.

This entertainment theater facility will support a wide variety of industrial enterprises including stage plays, music concerts, games, traditional entertainment, and even business events. It’s a broad range, but with the restriction of only 3DCG holographic content, it will be exciting to see what kind of productions will be lined up!

For the holograms, state-of-the-art technology is used. By using a Pepper’s Ghost-type holographic installation composed of multiple layers, physical depth is added to the 3DCG image, and the performer comes to life as if they were there in reality. In this way, a new entertainment industry using full CG in stage plays and operas is possible.

A lot of effort is also being put into stage planning. Wide Wire Works, who produce the live concerts featuring Hatsune Miku, and studio TED, who work on a variety of content which includes holograms beginning with the anime One Piece, will be working on planning and developing together. You can look forward to never-before-seen entertainment shows.
