Possibly the Quickest Interview in the World!? Keiji Inafune and Eiko Tanaka on the “RED ASH” Kickstarter Project

There Is So Much that I Want to Give to the World

TOM: The reveal of ReCore for the Xbox One at E3 this year certainly drew plenty of attention. Did you have any plans of releasing RED ASH as a console game as well?

Inafune: Of course I did. However, because the cost of console games is incredibly high, I decided to release it as a PC game since it is the option that is within our budget range. Just like Mighty No. 9, we may be able to create different versions for other platforms as well if there is enough funding available. I think that RED ASH will turn out to be even better than Mighty No. 9, so I would really like to have it available on other consoles for everyone to enjoy!

TOM: And Ms. Tanaka, what is your attitude towards this Kickstarter project?

Tanaka: Just like how last year was our first time at Anime Expo, this Kickstarter project is the first time in the history of STUDIO4℃ that we took on something like this. When I think of Kickstarters, the first thing that comes to mind is the name of director Yuasa from MIND GAME and his Kick-Heart Kickstarter project. Witnessing his determination to overcome challenges and bring something special to the world was an incredibly powerful experience. I learned about the existence of Kickstarters from that time, but was unable to bring the studio into one until this point.

Inafune: It certainly takes a lot of courage to take on a Kickstarter. The reward is amazing, since the bond that forms between the creators and fans from around the world is something that you cannot experience with any other type of project. In addition, you and your supporters also gain ownership over the product, which allows you to be free to make anything that you can imagine with the funds. Unfortunately, this usually does not happen because receiving funding or being sponsored by a certain organization or group means that you lose control over the rights to the product. The only way to get around this is to challenge yourself with a Kickstarter.

TOM: Do you have any concerns over your second Kickstarter project?

Inafune: To be honest, I cannot say that I don’t. Even though I am concerned, I still want to challenge myself with it. People are often satisfied with succeeding just once. They think that is enough, and at the same time they are afraid that their success will be forgotten if they fail the second time around. This fear of being labelled as a failure makes it particularly difficult to challenge yourself to something again, and I think that is pretty boring. There is so much that I want to give to the world, and there is no way to suppress that emotion. As long as there is a way and a possibility, I will continue to work and challenge myself. People do ask me what I will do if I’m not successful, and I usually respond with a simple “I don’t know.” If your project fails, well, it fails. Isn’t it better to think about failure after it actually happens?

Tanaka: In order for STUDIO4℃ to be free to create what it wants to in the future, we absolutely must be able to develop our own unique content and also have our own media as well. That is one of the reasons why the success of the RED ASH project is so important for us. Not only are all of us at STUDIO4℃ doing everything that we possibly can, we have also asked creators who have worked with us before to lend us their strength as well. We are making the best animation film ever, and we won’t stop until we have created something that we cannot possibly beat.
