Toei has announced a completely new TV anime series of the popular Dragon Ball franchise will begin broadcasting on Fuji TV (among other channels) from July 2015. The series will be called Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball Super will be broadcast every Sunday from 9 to 9.30 a.m. Toei Animation will be in charge of production and Kimitoshi Chioka will direct.
Attracting the most attention is that Dragon Ball’s original author, Akira Toriyama, will himself be responsible for planning the series, which will feature an all-new story previously untold in Toriyama’s original manga. Perhaps this will be the long-awaited new installment of the Dragon Ball franchise that fans both in Japan and abroad have been eagerly awaiting. The story is set after Goku’s glorious battle with Majin Buu when Earth has once again returned to peace. Further details regarding the plot have not yet been announced, but it has been revealed that Masako Nozawa will play the three roles of Goku, Gohan, and Goten.
Dragon Ball is the popular manga series which Akira Toriyama began publishing in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) in 1984. Sales of the collected tankobon volumes have surpassed 230 million copies worldwide. The Dragon Ball TV anime series has been broadcast all over the world and is loved as an anime that represents Japan. The franchise has also been developed into many other media including theatrical movies and games.
The theatrical movie Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ was released on April 18, 2015 and has just become a big hit. Resurrection ‘F’ is also an all-new story, and Dragon Ball Super will carry on from there. 2015 seems like the year of new beginnings for Dragon Ball.

Comment from Masako Nozawa (Goku, Gohan, Goten):
“I’ve used the word “cho” (super) in so many commercials, games and other media, so it is fantastic that the long-awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin. This new series that we’ve all been looking forward to and eagerly awaiting will be even better if it continues for a long, long time.”
(Goku) Hey! I’m so happy to be able to see you all again.
(Gohan) Dad, I’m so glad. We can see everyone!
(Goten) Waah, I’m going to fuse with Trunks again!
(Goku) Everyone! Come and watch us!
Comment from producer Osamu Nozaki (Fuji TV):
“I’m excited and nervous to begin this completely new TV anime based on an original plot by Akira Toriyama of the Dragon Ball series, which I was so enthralled by as a child that I was completely glued to the TV screen. While reading the plot I received from Mr. Toriyama, my dreams just kept on growing.
“Enemies even stronger than Buu and Frieza might just appear. I’m so looking forward to this brand new TV anime, the first all-new Dragon Ball on TV in 18 years, Dragon Ball Super!”
Comment from producer Mitsumi Kido (Toei Animation):
“Right away when I first joined this company I was assigned to Dragon Ball Z (when the Frieza arc was being broadcast). It was only for a very short time, but I still have such vivid memories of the passion and tension of the project then. Bringing that same Dragon Ball essence to this current project, with a completely new creative team, we’re going to deliver a completely new Dragon Ball in the best possible way. Now all of the staff are ready to throw themselves completely into the production of Dragon Ball Super. We hope everyone will enjoy it!”
