Tokyo Anime Award Festival to Be Held from March 19-23, 2015

The schedule for the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2015 (TAAF), which aims to be an international animation film festival that represents Japan, has been announced. The event will run for five days, from March 19-23, 2015, at Toho Cinemas Nihonbashi. The event started this year when the then Tokyo Anime Award changed to a film festival, and it is being held again in 2015. As its second time being held, it seems the event is expected to be even bigger.

In celebration of TAAF 2015, a special screening of the award-winning works of TAAF 2014 will be held at Toho Cinemas Nihonbashi on Sept. 5. There will be a talk session and a screening of the award-winning works from last year’s Competition category.

The TAAF 2014 Award-Winning Works Special Screening will be divided into two parts. The first is a talk session at which an outline of TAAF 2015 will be given along with the significance of the event. After that, a screening will be held for the full-length Grand Prix-winning work from the Competition category: The Congress. Directed by Ari Folman, The Congress is a human sci-fi that mixes real photography with 2D animation. The film depicts the good and evil of the human heart. Because Folman’s previous work, Waltz with Bashir, won several awards, there is anticipation for this new work as well.

The second part of the event will be a screening of three works: Ernest & Celestine (directed by Benjamin Renner, Vincent Patar, and Stéphane Aubier), the TAAF 2014 Feature Film category winner; Lettres de Femmes (directed by Augusto Zanovello), winner of the Short Film Grand Prix; and Airy Me, (directed by Yōko Kuno), the Short Film category winner. From hand-drawn to stop-motion animation, attendees will be able to enjoy works from a variety of genres.

The judges for the Competition category of TAAF 2015 will be director Ari Folman and Marcel Jean, artistic director of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Expect to see a vast variety of works at TAAF 2015.
