The 17th feature length film for the anime series Pokémon will be released nationwide in Japan on July 19, 2014. A new official title was announced on Feb. 15 for the film, which until now had been referred to as Pokémon the Movie XY: Cocoon of Destruction.
The official title is Pokémon the Movie XY: Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie. Diancie is a newly revealed mythical Pokémon and is the princess of Diamond Ore Country, which acts as the setting for the film. Her species is Jewel Pokémon, her type is Rock and Fairy, and her ability is Clear Body.
The film’s Diamond Ore Country is located deep underground. No one knows of its existence, and it is peacefully inhabited by the Jewel Pokémon Carbink.
However, there is an energy source needed to sustain the Ore Country. That energy source is a large diamond known as the “Sacred Diamond.” The lifeforce of this Sacred Diamond is about to run out. The princess Diancie can create diamonds, but she does not yet possess that ability. With this crisis facing the Ore Country, Diancie embarks on a journey with Ash and Pikachu to find the “Life Pokémon” Xerneas and obtain her sacred power. However, in their path awaits “Destruction Pokémon” Yveltal.
Continuing as director is Kunihiko Yuyama, who has brought to life previous popular films in the series. The animation supervisor will be Yōichi Kotabe.
In addition to Rika Matsumoto as Ash and Ikue Ohtani as Pikachu, the cast includes Yuki Kaji (Clemont), Mariya Ise (Bonnie), Mayuki Makiguchi (Serena), Megumi Hayashibara (Jesse), Shinichiro Miki (James), Inuko Inuyama (Meowth), and Unshou Ishizuka (Narrator). It’s all the familiar faces from the TV series. The usual impressive cast of guest characters are expected to be announced at a later date.
The series is also known for its long-term promotional activities that include theater gifts, advanced purchase gifts, and pre-release events. With the film release about a half a year away, there will surely be plenty to enjoy in that long period of time.
