On Jan. 7, exactly one month after the movie released, its box office earnings reached ¥3,636,500,850, displaying the huge success of the movie with 3,088,143 tickets sold.
The box office total for Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie has surpassed even that of Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea, the largest grossing Detective Conan movie to date. The combination of the popular series Lupin III and Detective Conan is largely responsible for this. Compared to Private Eye in the Distant Sea, the Jan. 7 totals for the movie represent a 115.5% increase in ticket sales and a 113% increase in box office revenue. The movie now has the possibility of clearing ￥4 billion in box office revenue before its theatrical run ends.
The movie is a continuation of the Friday night TV special Lupin III vs. Detective Conan that aired in 2009. Due to the program gathering such a huge response from the two popular authors’ series appearing together, it evolved into a movie. Due to the popularity of both series, the movie was released on 329 screens nationwide and attracted an even larger following than was anticipated. It has even made its way into the top five of the movie industry’s 2013 ranking, and there are signs that it may even take the top spot.
As for the demographic of moviegoers, there are families and female fans who are fans of Detective Conan as well as many Lupin III fans in their 40s and 50s. The biggest influence above all seems to be that the movie is the first Lupin III movie in 17 years, with the last being 1996’s Lupin III: Dead or Alive.
