In commemoration of the opening of Shiseido’s main building, the Shiseido Ginza Building, a debut photo exhibit themed after Hirohiko Araki’s manga JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is being held in the Hanatsubaki Hall on the building’s third floor until Oct. 9.
The front of the venue features a large photo of all the characters together, and the walls inside are covered in large photos of each individual character. Across from each picture is a tablet that shows concept art of each character from the manga.
The exhibit focuses on 18 characters from the series. These include Josuke Higashikata, Rohan Kishibe, and Akira Otoishi from Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable; Giorno Giovana, Bruno Bucciarati, Leone Abbacchio, Jean Pierre Polnareff, Guido Mista, Risotto Nero, Melone, Secco, and Diavolo from Part 5: Vento Aureo; Jolyne Cujoh, Ermes Costello, Foo Fighters, and Weather Report from Part 6: Stone Ocean; and Blackmore and President Funny Valentine from Part 7: Steel Ball Run. The hair and makeup of each character has been perfectly recreated. Each have “hair” in the form of hoods, hats, and more. Also, while emulating the mood of the work, original accents have also been included on each character.
Tadashi Harada, a top beauty specialist at Shiseido who created the artistic portrayals on display, commented regarding the exhibit,
>I have been a fan of Araki’s since Baoh. I think parts of his works have also been influenced by fashion. I thought about what would happen if these gave back to fashion, and I arrived at this theme. I selected characters who have hair, makeup, and a style that I thought would be interesting to express. Being that it was set in Italy, I chose many characters from the fashionable Part 5.
Speaking of JoJo, the photos on display feature the characteristic posing known as “JoJo Stand” as well as other poses which Harada went on to explain:
>For the first cut, I photographed the models in JoJo Stand, but after that, I left the posing up to them. I chose the ones that look the best in a fashion sense. The one who I was impacted by during shooting was Secco. Blackmore was also amazing. But, the one I am most pleased with is Rohan Kishibe. I like the flow of the hair and the simple stance.
“Those who look at them might have varied opinions, but I think they will understand the love that I included in each one,” explained Harada gleefully. Lastly, we asked about his favorite part of JoJo and received an unexpected answer surging with his love of JoJo:
>In truth, I like Part 2 the best. However, I didn’t recreate that this time (laughs). I want to try my hand a Kars, for example. It would be interesting if I could recreated all of his hair that is concealed by his scarf. Four years from now will be the 30th anniversary of JoJo, so maybe I will do 30 more characters including Kars.
