Donations Now Being Accepted for 3D-Printed and Reasonably Priced Bipedal Robot Kit RAPIRO

Have you ever wanted to build a robot in the same way you put together a plastic scale model? Of course, there are many different types of robots manufactured with different capabilities, and they continue to get more complex. However, most of these are too expensive for the average individual to purchase for personal use in their home. Luckily, Kiraku has developed RAPIRO, a low-priced and Raspberry Pi compatible robot kit to meet your robot needs.

RAPIRO was made possible with cooperation from 3D printing service JMC, mold and dies maker Miyoshi, and electronic components manufacturer Switch Science. It features a cute design, is easy to put together, can grasp objects in its hands, walk on two feet, and, above all, comes with a reasonable price tag. RAPIRO's simple design makes it accessible to beginners and requires just a screwdriver to be put together.

RAPIRO's head has been specially designed to fit the Raspberry Pi (sold separately), the popular card-sized PC system that has currently sold over 1 million units. By installing the Linux operating system, one can use cameras, speakers, displays, other USB devices and connect LAN cables, giving RAPIRO a wide range of potential capabilities.

RAPIRO is set not only for personal use, but for educational use by those studying robot engineering or programming. It comes with a sample program pre-installed and even those without programming knowledge can follow the Web tutorial to set it up. The servo motor's control substrate is compatible with the internationally popular Arduino, which means that users can easily make use of the platform’s many program extensions.

The tentative price is £270, but the developers currently need funding to make RAPIRO possible. They are raising funds through the crowdfunding service Kickstarter. Contributors will be able to pre-order their RAPIRO for the reduced reward price of £229 (Plus £20 for shipping outside the UK). This means that even with shipping included, you could get your RAPIRO for £249, over £20 below the tentative price.
