A wall under a JR overpass in Akihabara was recently painted in a new Chiyoda art project called “Let’s Create Together! Art in the City!” The project was started in April and finished earlier this month. People are now seeing the new patterns and talking about them.
The art painted on the wall under the overpass is a neribei pattern that consists of overlapping designs, like tiles on a roof. On April 21, residents of the area were invited to participate in an event to paint the wall.
The artwork is surprising, even considering that the concrete wall was also painted. Take a look for yourself. This type of wall painting is effective in preventing crime and graffiti.
Also participating in the event were decorative artists who would later make appearances at the art event “Salon Tokyo 2013” which was held from May 23-26. Decorative painters are those who create ornament paintings that accurately convey the sense of different materials being used, such as marble and wood. At the “Salon Tokyo 2013,” painters from 26 Western countries gathered to show off the techniques they learned in their respective countries. This unique event offered the chance to see ornament paintings that have never been seen before in the world.
The event is held once a year for four days. This year marks the 18th time the event has been held, and it finally landed in Asia. It was also the first event in Japan at which attendees could experience decorative painting. From the cultural exchange seen through the handcrafted pieces, it was a chance for people from all over the world to connect.
The event contained not only display items for viewing, but also workshops for creating wall art, eco bags, and more, as well as lectures by some of today’s leading artists.
