As part of Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2013, a talk show for the anime The Prince of Tennis was held at ADK’s booth on March 24.
The front of the booth was packed with fans eagerly waiting for the show to begin. Screams erupted from the crowd when three voice stars from the series appeared on stage: Junko Minagawa (Ryoma Echizen), Daichi Endo (Oni Jujiro), and the MC for the event, Junichi Suwabe (Atobe Keigo).
Once fans saw Minagawa step on stage, they yelled out, “Cute!” and Minagawa, in the voice of Ryoma, shouted back, “No, you all are cuter!” to a rise of delighted shouts from the crowd. The atmosphere of the convention center heated up in an instant.
Having been one year since recording on the anime ended, Suwabe and Endo shared their memories, saying, “Even though the recording was done in the morning, I was surprised by my colleagues’ extremely high spirits,” and, “Recording in the studio was so fun, I almost forgot it was work.”
After this, the first half of Episode 7 of the OVA, titled “The Prince of Secrets,” which will be included in Volume 7 of the Blu-ray and DVD for The Prince of Tennis (on sale April 24), was screened. The OVA takes place on a solitary island where the characters become stranded due to a storm and turn their situation into a training camp. The middle school students then begin a pillow fight around Horio’s luggage. Many popular characters appear in the OVA. Cheers and laughter from the crowd continued throughout the screening.
After the screening, two segments called “Let’s Ask the Cast! New Tennis Q&A” and “Focus Tips! Aim for the TeniPri Characters Game” were held. For the Q&A portion, the voice stars answered questions that were submitted beforehand by fans to Twitter. Fans didn’t restrain themselves from asking some fastball questions, such as, “When you first saw the character Oni Jujiro, why did you want to play him?” which was directed at Endo. After hearing this question, Endo couldn’t help but let out a sarcastic laugh. In the game portion, fans had the chance to win complimentary tickets for premium yakiniku (friend meat). All three voice stars had a great time.
Although the TV broadcast of The Prince of Tennis may be over, many events for the anime will be taking place, including the Echizen Ryoma Live Tour 2013 on April 7 and the TeniPri Festa 2013 from Sep. 15-21. With these announcements powering up the fans in the audience, the curtain closed on this enthusiastic talk show. There is no mistaking that this year will be another eventful year for fans of The Prince of Tennis!
