The first anime movie for the hugely popular manga Hunter x Hunter, Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge, was released in Japan on Jan. 12. At a stage greeting for the movie, many cast members, including Megumi Han, Mariya Ise, Miyuki Sawashiro, Daisuke Namikawa, Umika Kawashima, and Naohito Fujiki, appeared on stage to give fans surprising news. It was announced that production has already begun on the second anime movie for the series.
The story for Phantom Rouge was written by the original author of Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi, 10 years ago. The story focuses on Gon and the rest of the cast searching for Kurapika’s stolen Scarlet Eyes. On their trail is the Phantom Troupe and Hisoka, as well as a mysterious man named Omokage, who once betrayed the Troupe. The curtain raises on a heroic battle for the Scarlet Eyes!
Shortly after the stage greeting started, Han, who voices Gon, said, “10 years ago, I spent my own money to buy the manga Hunter x Hunter for the first time.” Being overcome with emotion and tears flowing down her cheeks, she went on to say, “I am so happy this day has come!” Ise, who voices Killua, shared, “When I was a boy, I used to read Jump. Hunter x Hunter was the first shonen manga I ever bought.” She went on to confess that her first love was Killua.
Sawashiro, who voices Kurapika, joyfully talked about the movie, saying, “[The movie] depicts the childhood of Kurapika, who is constantly engulfed in his imagination. It’s a very important work.” Namikawa, who voices Hisoka, then talked lightheartedly about the difference in his character from the TV series: “Hisoka’s skin is slick and his hair has a fluffy feel (ha ha). He’s the cream of the crop!” His playful comments elicited laughter from the crowd.
