This is a movie that should be seen by all fans of Anime, not only SAO fans. It's true that if you'd followed the series, then you would have more detailed information of each character's background. But, the way this movie was scripted that's not so important. Enough information about the wheres, whens, who's and whys of past actions are given throughout the movie that allows the viewer to enjoy the movie and understand the unveiling plot.
